CONSERVATIVE MOVEMENT

The last place on earth one might expect to find the largest single private collection of literature on the conservative movement is Berkeley. Yet 62 boxes of material documenting the movement's conception and growth in this country is now part of The Bancroft Library, a gift from the personal archives of sociologist Sara Diamond.

"Because Berkeley is frequently thought of as a center of liberal/radical politics, people might not think we would want a conservative component in our collection," said Peter Hanff, the library's deputy director. "But we strive to document all social action movements in California without regard to political viewpoint."

Diamond, a Cal alum, said the campus "will preserve the collection in the highest condition, and it will live longer than I do."
