25 YEARS OF BIOTECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE

A March 12-13 symposium celebrating the 25th anniversary of the birth of biotechnology drew nearly a thousand people to campus. Biotech luminaries including James Watson, co-discoverer of DNA's structure, reflected on the field's history and future.

Berkeley professors who took part in panel discussions were Daniel Koshland, who made fundamental advances in the understanding of enzymes and protein chemistry; Edward Penhoet, co-founder of Chiron Corp., a biotech company that invented the technology to produce the hepatitis B vaccine; and Paul Rabinow, author of "Making PCR: A Story of Biotechnology."

The three professors also were interviewed a day before the event on National Public Radio's "Talk of the Nation: Science Friday."
