Statement By University of California President Richard C. Atkinson

"I am proud that UC professor George Akerlof has been awarded the 2001 Nobel Prize for economic sciences in recognition of his landmark research on the forces that explain how markets work. This extraordinary honor is a tribute to the originality, vigor and excellence of his research and to the remarkable quality of the Berkeley campus. I am delighted to extend the congratulations of the entire UC community to our newest Nobel laureate."

Atkinson noted that faculty and researchers affiliated with UC have now won 44 Nobel Prizes, including 12 in the past six years.
