Bear Debate Team Takes on Brits April 8

The Berkeley debate team takes on its counterparts from Oxford and Cambridge universities Tuesday, April 8, to debate the topic of the United States as a threat to world peace.

The debate is part of the British government's "Britain Meets the Bay" Spring l997 festival of culture, sports, education, trade and technology, one of the largest international promotions it has ever undertaken.

Members of Cal Forensics are looking forward to the debate with eagerness and trepidation, given the reputation of the Oxford and Cambridge debaters for wit, erudition, intellectual agility and mastery of the techniques of argumentation and persuasion.

"Bring on the Brits," said one Cal debater. "We'll show them a thing or two about how to debate."

The event begins at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of International House, 2299 Piedmont Ave. It is free and open to the public.

More information on the festival is available by calling (800) 915-BMTB.
