Staff Assembly Honors Excellence In Management

The Berkeley Staff Assembly's Eighth Annual Excellence in Management Awards were presented May 9. This year's focus was on managers who promote health and safety in the workplace.

All winners, nominated by the staff they supervise, were recognized for going above and beyond the legal requirements to make health and safety a priority for their units.

Chancellor Tien and Vice Chancellor Horace Mitchell joined BSA

Coordinator Cameron Olen and Excellence in Management Chair Debbie Richerson in acknowledging the award recipients.

Maria Bertero-Barcelo, principal administrative analyst, Academic Senate, "was instrumental in obtaining a grant for disaster and first aid training for 20 workers stationed in Stephens Hall. She consistently encourages and supports flex-time, release time and other alternate schedule opportunities for staff."

Cyndee Clearwater, MSO, College of Environmental Design, has built "a positive healthy attitude about the workplace" resulting in a healthy work environment and "on a deeper level, in terms of healthy two-way communication, reduced stress and a safe feeling of trust."

Robert Hamilton, senior development engineer, ERL/microfabri-cation lab, was recognized for "constant awareness and review of health and safety issues to make our work environment safer for all."

Betty Holland, MSO, Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, provided ergonomically correct workstations, monitored office air and water for safety, and allowed flex-time for staff to take campus fitness classes.

Paul Lavely, director, Office of Radiation Safety, "continually works to provide his personnel with a safe working environment. He has always demonstrated a personal interest in the safety of his staff."

Glady Lou Lytle-Maull, administrative analyst, Mathematics, "knows more about nutrition and where to go for health related information than anybody we've ever met. She encourages us all to live happy, healthy, active lifestyles."

Lisa Maynard, business officer, Media Services, "has consistently circulated information, actively encourages all employees to participate in training and makes funds available to purchase items to create a safe workplace."

Alice Mead, human resources manager, IS&T, "is a model of communicating about training and health and safety in the workplace...she will support any safety/health concerns we bring up and act on them."

Mary Meikle, MSO, Graduate Division, "supported a thorough evaluation of every employee's workstation and requested that each supervisor be responsible for initiating this with their staff."

Ann Walls, MSO, Central Computing Services, has been known to "do whatever it takes to get the job done, even if certain duties are not part of her listed job assignments. (She) is very supportive of flex-time and alternate work schedules... (which) leads to a more healthy life style, both physically and mentally."

Nina Zurier, principal artist, University Art Museum, "has hands-on

knowledge of all aspects of this department and therefore knows the potential dangers first hand. When crises have arisen among the staff, she is always very willing to give them the needed time to take care of themselves or family."

These Four Staff are Tops in the Library

The Library Staff Development Committee presented four recognition awards to career staff for their contributions to the library based upon performance excellence, personal interaction, initiative and creativity.

The recipients were nominated by their co-workers and selected by last year's award winners.

Penny Bertrang in Library System Development was honored for her role in the planning, construction and service of the library autocirc system and her work on the library's implementation of CARS.

Joseph Catalano in the Music Library automated many of the circulation procedures, including use of barcodes and institutional patron identifications, and shared his time-saving ideas with other library units where they were successfully implemented.

John Creaser took the initiative in creating the Earth Sciences and Map Library Web site, which has been rated by Point Communications in the top 5 percent of the Web.

Susan Snyder of the Bancroft Library planned and executed a major stack shift during a peak busy period without sacrificing the highest standard of public service.

Human Corps: 'It Starts With the Heart'

The Chancellor's Advisory Committee on National and Community Service honored outstanding community service award recipients at its annual Human Corps recognition ceremony April 25.

The Human Corps Task Force was established on the Berkeley campus in 1987 as a result of state legislation designed to encourage students to enrich their education through community service.

Professor Kathryn Scott, chair of the Chancellor's Committee on National and Community Service, presided over the ceremony, called "It Starts With the Heart."

In addition to faculty and staff, seven students and four student groups were honored for volunteer work that ranged from mentoring and providing outreach to elementary and high school students to working in an AIDS ward.

Faculty Award

Professor Jabari Mahiri

Mahiri has established a special relationship with Martin Luther King Elementary School in West Oakland. Due to his patient efforts, the entire teaching staff is now computer literate, a significant change from a single teacher two years ago. He has also written grants to benefit the school, reads to students in the "Men Read Too" program and works with the Family Science and Family Math program.

Staff Award

Leon Schmidt

Schmidt, a staff member in the Office of Public Affairs, is the creator of the Berkeley Staff Mentorship Project. It recruits campus staff members to serve as mentors to Berkeley High School students. Today, the project has more than 70 active staff members who are providing 75 young people with much needed personal attention.
